Joseph Keckler
Biography
Joseph Keckler possesses a powerful and expressive voice, magnetic stage presence, and strange mind. He often performs with only a video projector and laptop as he delivers haunting ballads, spooky grooves, and ambiguously autobiographical arias about such topics as having sex with ghosts and overdosing on hallucinogens. In a mod of his own, operating somewhere between opera, art, and rock and roll, Keckler has been praised by the New York Times as a “major talent who shatters conventional boundaries.”
Keckler’s performances have been presented by NPR Tiny Desk series, Lincoln Center, Centre Pompidou and other venues. He recently made a splash touring Australia on double bills with Lydia Lunch, playing at Melbourne Recital Centre, MONA, and on ABC. He previously toured the U.S. solo and as Sleater Kinney’s national support act. He has created multiple evening-length performance pieces, numerous songs, several short films, and wrote Dragon at the Edge of a Flat World, a collection of stories and essays. He is currently working on an EP.
